Equine Athlete Veterinary Services- Kentucky

Equine Athlete Veterinary Services offers a 12-month Advanced Equine Surgery Fellowship intended for veterinarians who have completed an equine surgery residency and are preparing for ACVS board certification or seeking advanced, high-volume orthopedic experience in a performance focused practice.

This fellowship provides concentrated exposure to complex orthopedic surgery, advanced imaging guided procedures, and perioperative case management in elite equine athletes, within a hospital based, non-travel practice model.

Fellowship Focus & ACVS Alignment

This fellowship is structured to support ACVS large animal surgery board preparation, with emphasis on advanced case exposure, refinement of surgical technique, and continued development of clinical judgment following residency training. The program is not a residency but is designed to complement prior training through high case volume and focused mentorship.

Surgical Case Volume

The Surgery Fellow will participate in a consistently high surgical caseload, with involvement in case planning, operative execution, postoperative management, and long-term outcomes.

Annual case exposure includes:
• Over 100 fracture repairs, including complex and referral orthopedic trauma
• Approximately 400-500 arthroscopic procedures
• Over 100 upper airway surgeries
• CT-guided surgical procedures, including minimally invasive techniques

Surgical & Diagnostic Resources

The hospital is fully equipped to support advanced orthopedic and minimally invasive surgery, including:
• Complete AO instrumentation, including LCP plating systems
• Intraoperative fluoroscopy
• Advanced CT-guided surgical planning and execution
• Comprehensive orthopedic and sports medicine equipment consistent with current ACVS practice standards

Mentorship, Autonomy & Education

• Collaboration with experienced, board-certified equine surgeons
  • Progressive autonomy appropriate for post-residency training
  • Case review and discussion focused on surgical decision-making and outcomes
  
  

Board Preparation & Time Off

Recognizing the demands of ACVS board certification, this position includes:
• Dedicated time off availability for board study and examination preparation
• A schedule structured to support focused study while maintaining surgical involvement
• Institutional support for candidates actively pursuing ACVS certification

Schedule & Work Environment

This is a hospital-based position with no travel requirements. The schedule reflects a high volume surgical service with predictable workflow and seasonal variability typical of an advanced equine orthopedic practice.

Equine Athlete Veterinary Services is a multi-state, multi-location practice serving some of the most elite show and competition horses in the United States. We have veterinarians based in MI, CA, AZ, KY, and a hospital located in Simpsonville, KY.
